Tape Two 14th Year (belated) Anniversary

To me, Vinnie's musical millage shows everywhere in his playing... He's like red wine, he has gotten better with time. But not necessarily better "technically" and I don't care really (to a certain extent I do though) since not that many players are as technically good as he, but musically... WOW!! The whole Vinnie Colaiuta 'package' impacts me in areas he did not in the 1980's... his ideas, touch and groove have matured and that's what impacts me. In his Zappa days, his genious was obvious. But with "time" [img]wink.gif[/img] meaning after playing in various DIFFERENT contexts, his genius has spread out in other areas.

His playing on 1989 "Secret" WOWS me... So is his playing on 2000 "Document", I simply love the palladium intro. The ghost notes section you guys are referring to wows me each time I listen to it, I always get excited when I hear it. The sound of someone giving ALL he has in the moment, no matter what. That's how VInnie sounds to me on Document... He's giving ALL he has, he could well mistakenly hit a tom rim along the way, just adding more mere human spices to his performance.

Even on the Modern Drummer 2000 video when he solos on "I'm teaked", on one instance he lacks precision hitting the 10" tom, he misses the center and consequently not making the tom sing as well as it should, that's fine by me too.

So what Derek says is true and not necessarily controvercial at all... Vinnie never was said to be a Weckl type precision type of player, as some of you said too. I only have in my possession one 1980's boot leg to compare. And on Zildjian Days in New York, I am not 100% sure he was that much more precise than he is today.

As for Weckl and Gadd, I have not followed Gadd in the recent years that much. But always a delight to hear him groove. The way he keeps Buddy Rich's band together is remarkably supportive musically.

Weckl has changed yes, I look forward to hearing him in the next CCEB CD. These days I am listening to the first 1985 CCEB CD, I still enjoy it verrry much. He's got some very HIP ideas happening on that CD. But for some unkown reasons, I am not as attracted to the new Weckl. Maybe because his solo material does nothing for me... Not sure... But what a technical master Dave is!! For all the time, efforts and works he's put into his craft, he's got all my respect.

My favorite section in the tune is when Vinnie and David break it down before Vinnie solos by himself. Reminds me of Chick Electric stuff with Weckl back in the Inside Out days. (uptempo though) As far as Palladium, I still think the execution of that intro could have been better, but I'm NOT saying it wasn't good stuff. I know better than that. Vinnie's Latin playing that I've heard (at least the medium tempo stuff) just doesn't QUITE have the flow that I like on that type of stuff, and believe me when I tell you that it hurts to say that. (Vinnie is also my favorite player). Not to imply a V vs D #gazillionth competition or anything, but I'd rather listen to Dave play Latin stuff. Of course, that's more of what Dave plays in his own element with his band and such, so of course he sounds more seasoned at it. Anyway, Pfft. [img]smile.gif[/img]

I guess I agree, but the greatness is that his mistakes are a million times better than our best days! I remember the first time I met Vinnie, and that was the advice that he gave me, specifically "throw it out there and don't be afraid of making a mistake."

I can't imagine being any of these guys. I mean how do you keep it up? How can you keep reinventing yourself when you are at the top of your game? I have to really compliment Weckl here. I think that his music from the band standpoint is pretty much the same song. But his drumming seems to have truly evolved in the past 14 years.

Document was recorded from two nights on a European tour. Karizma did the tour prior to the 2000 MD Festival appearance. All the material would've been familiar to Vinnie, wouldn't it, not ten minutes old?
